As you are all aware When Genius Prevailed has a “fan” Facebook Page, but Money McBags does not have a personal one to allow him to “friend” all of his loyal readers.

Below is his actual correspondence with Facebook to try to get a personal Facebook page.  While it takes a few emails to get in to it, I believe you will sympathize with his plight as you continue to read.

None of the names have been changed to protect the innocent and the complete correspondence has been copied in its unedited form including broken grammar, moderate hyperbole, and infallible logic so it can live on unfettered for posterity.

The struggle begins…..

Hi,

Facebook requires all members to provide their real first and last names. Your account must comply with all of the following authenticity standards:

• Fake names are not permitted.
• Initials cannot stand in place of your full name.
• Nicknames can be used, but only if they are a variation on your real first or last name, such as ‘Bob’ instead of ‘Robert’.
• The use of professional and religious titles within names is not permitted.
• The use of special characters within names is not permitted.
• Impersonating anyone or anything is not permitted.

If you would like to use this profile again, just get back to us with your real name, and we will reactivate the account for you.

If you are concerned about your privacy, you can always restrict who can find you in searches from the “Basic Directory Information” page, which can be accessed by selecting the “Privacy Settings” option from the “Account” drop-down menu available from the top right corner of every Facebook page.

There is also a section to list your alternate (or maiden) name on the Account Settings page. People will be able to search for you by both your account name and your alternate name. You can select whether your alternate name will appear along with your account name on your profile, search listings and friend requests.

Thanks for your understanding,

Oliver

Hi,

Thanks for providing this information. At this time, we cannot verify the ownership of the account. Please reply to this email with a scanned or digital image of a government-issued ID (e.g., driver’s license). Please make sure the following information is clear:

•       Full name
•       Date of birth
•       Photo

Please black out any personal information that is not needed to verify your identity (e.g., social security number). Rest assured that we will permanently delete your ID from our servers once we have used it to verify the authenticity of your account.

Additionally, please include all of our previous correspondence so that we can refer to your original email. Once we have received this information, we will reevaluate the status of the account. Please note that we will not be able to process your request unless you send in proper identification. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Oliver,

What can’t you verify?  I’m human, I’m answering your e-mails, and I am using my name which you can see from my gmail account.  This is preposterous.

If my name were Peter Johnson, would you be doing this?

Would you do this to Dick Trickle http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Trickle?

Or Nohjay Nimpson http://www.sjuhawks.com/sports/w-track/mtt/nimpson_nohjay00.html?

Or the delightful yet spunky Charity Beaver http://surveys.dmagazine.com/10MB/Details/Charity_Beaver ?

Oliver, just imagine how you would feel if your last name were Clothesoff and then some facebook guy wouldn’t let you sign up.

Anyway, let me know how to rectify this without having to send personal information over the internet as that seems a bit shady to me.  I think together we can solve this problem.

Thanks,

Money McBags

Hi,

We apologize, but the only way we will be able to verify your name is if you reply to this email with an attachment of a scanned, government-issued photo identification confirming your full name and date of birth. If you do not have access to a scanner, a digital image of your photo ID will be accepted as well. Rest assured that we will permanently delete your ID from our servers once we have used it to verify the authenticity of your account.

Additionally, you should make sure to copy and paste all of our previous correspondence into your message when you reply. Once we have received this information, we will reevaluate the status of the account. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Oliver,

Again, I am glad we are trying to work this out, but I don’t see why I should have to send you a government issued ID just because my name doesn’t fit your non-defined standards of what a person’s name should be.  That seems invasive and a bit much to get a Facebook page.  Plus how do I trust you are not going to give my ID to a Nigerian prince to help him get his sick uncle in to the country once he gets enough money to regain his throne.

I am sorry facebook thinks my name is funny, I didn’t choose it, and it is this kind of attitude towards me that has caused great internal pain through the years.  It’s not easy being green, or named after green.

Since I am not sure if I am being scammed here, if you can send me the government issued photo IDs of these Facebook participants, I’ll feel more comfortable that I am not being grossly singled out for absolutely no reason.

I think we are getting closer to a solution and I appreciate your help.  Together we can solve this.

Warmest Regards,

Money McBags

Oliver,

Again, there isn’t a chance I am going to send a random dude on the internet a copy of my government issued ID.  I am sorry someone appointed you the name fairy and gave you permission to continue to make a mockery of the only name I have ever had.  Honestly, it would be easier for me to walk in to a bank and secure a $1MM loan than it seems to be to for me to get a silly facebook page in order to show all of my high school cronies what a marginal and unfulfilling life I have carved out for myself.

So as i previously said, if you can send me the IDs you must have requested for Mr. MeHoff http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/San-Diego-CA/Jack-W-Mehoff/185038833148?ref=search

, Mr. JaBlowMe http://www.facebook.com/pages/Haywood-Jablome/114751294131
, and Mr. Hertz (and if Dick Hertz is from Holden, MA, I will certainly be intrigued)  http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=1669860149&ref=search, and can verify to me that you haven’t used them in some nefarious way, I will be open to providing you with the information you seek.  Additionally, since we’re friends now, if you could send me a copy of your Facebook employee ID badge so I know you are not scamming me (feel free to black out unnecessary information), that would make me feel more comfortable with this.

Alternatively, you can get off your high name-prejudiced horse and let me me sign up.  I mean what is going to happen to facebook if Money McBags joins?  Really?  This is so absurd that even facebook accepted name Joe-Mama Contreras http://en-pi.facebook.com/people/Joe-Mama-Contreras/1517538292 thinks you are being silly.

Let me know how to proceed because even though you emailed me the same thing twice in a row, I feel that we are getting closer to a solution.

Would it help if I had my mom call yours?

Searching for a middle ground,

Money McBags aka Money McBags

Ps.  you keep asking me to paste all of our correspondences into this email so I have done so for you.

Oliver,

Thanks for working with me here.  I appreciate you coming down from the stand that I would need to send you a government ID to get a facebook page and thus violate all kinds of privacy concerns, really, it’s nice to be working together on this.  Unfortunately, I don’t have a student ID as I graduated many years ago and don’t keep expired items.

But I am willing to work with you as I would really like a facebook page so my high school chums who forgot about me can try to remember who I am and also so I can meet new friends like the Facebook approved Ben Dover http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=726406851&ref=search (did Ben send you a government ID or a student ID? or perhaps his Tau Iota Tau fraternity pin?).

Anyway, I think I have a solution.  Since you have agreed that a government ID is a ridiculous thing to send to get a facebook page and I no longer have a student ID and also think those can be so easily faked that they are a completely worthless form of ID, why don’t I just send you an autographed picture instead?

I have a nice head shot, I’ll write you a personal message (like “To Oliver, thanks for the memories.  It was real, it was fun, it was real fun.  Warmest regards, Money McBags”), and when you’re done with it you can auction it off on Ebay for a few extra nickels which might be enough to allow you to stop having to ask for people’s personal information and IDs over the internet in order to sell them to a Nigerian Prince to better support yourself.  Win, win, win.

I think this is a good solution as an autographed picture is certainly more valuable than some made up ID.

So what do you think?  We are getting closer here.  I have agreed to send you a picture of me and you have agreed that a government ID is not needed.

Or, one last idea is that you could just give me a facebook page (like you did with Joe-Mama
Contreras http://en-pi.facebook.com/people/Joe-Mama-Contreras/1517538292) and check back in a month to verify that giving Money McBags a facebook page did not cause facebook to implode.  It’s a novel approach, but you might earn high praise for customer satisfaction and thinking out of the box.

Let me know how to proceed.

Kindly,

Money McBags aka Money McBags

Oliver,

As I hadn’t heard back from you on where I should send the autographed picture, I just wanted to follow up.  Again, I am trying to get a Facebook page and yet you have deemed my name as unacceptable to Facebook as having Money McBags as a member would somehow bring Facebook to an early demise (though Facebook has seemingly survived the tidal wave of both I.P. Daily http://www.facebook.com/people/IP-Daily/1348852435 and I.P. Freely and it is unlikely either of them offered to send you an autographed picture).

Look, I feel like we were getting closer to a resolution.  I can’t help it that my name is Money McBags (you can blame my parents for that one, though if you’re going to blame them for anything, you should start with my trick knee and love of rainbows) and it certainly does nothing to my self-confidence to be treated in a way that not even Hugh Jass http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hugh-Jass/114634178547344 was likely treated.  We’ve already agreed that a government ID is not needed, and I have assured you that adding Money McBags to facebook would 97% not likely bring it to its end.  I have also offered to send you an autographed picture to verify I am who I am (with the personal message added completely free).  So what next?  Short of going to court and legally changing my name to something more acceptable like maybe Sum Dum Gai http://www.facebook.com/sumdumgai or Harry Palms http://www.facebook.com/people/Harry-Palms/507213235, I don’t know what else to do.

Anyway, let me know how to proceed.  And instead of being so worried about the harm Money McBags would somehow do to Facebook by letting him have a page where people could be his friends, think of all the good it could do.  Money McBags is sure the Facebook community would embrace him and together they could do wonderful things, like letting all of Money McBags’ high school cronies know he has led as unfulfilling of a life as they said he would.

So should I just sign up now or do you need to do something first?

Sincerely,

Money McBags aka Money McBags
